Gudi Padwa (ugadi)
Gudi padwa is an Indian Hindu festival which marks the beginning of Hindu calender's new year. It occurs on the first day of the chaitra month(the first month of Hindu calender). Prominently celebrated on the western and southern parts of india where it is commonly known as Gudi padwa/Ugadi.
This festival marks the beginning of spring in India.Huge processions with social messages are commonly seen on this day.People dress up with traditional clothes and visit various temples to seek blessings of the gods on the new year.Gudi padwa is considered as one whole muhurat(auspicious time) out of the three and half main muhurats according to Hindu mythology.People try to inculcate new and good habits from this day.
There is a tradition of having a special prasad on this day which is made from leaves and flowers of neem tree.Neem leaves have an important place in Ayurveda. It has anti bacterial properties, moreover having the decoction of the leaves on this time of the year says to purify our blood.It also destroys all types of intestinal worms and parasites.Bathing in decoction water of neem leaves tends to reduce skin and hair problems.Neem is therefore used in major ayurvedic skin care products.
On gudi padwa, houses are decorated with marigold and mango leaves garland,huge rangolis are made in front of houses, on roads to welcome the good vibes in the new year.After having the decoction of neem as prasad , people erect 'Gudi' that is a cane bamboo stick is decorated with new piece of silk cloth , batasha(sweet discs), neem leaves, mango leaves and marigold garlands and a copper/silver kalash is inverted on the end above the decoration.It is believed the Gudi marks prosperity, success and happiness.As this is an auspicious muhurat people buy cars , new houses or any new thing on this day so that the thing become prosperous for them.
In lunch the people eat sweet vegetarian food, in maharashtra and in marathi culture, women make puri shrikhand to cherish the sweet begining.Gudi padwa also marks the beginning of chaitra navratri which is prominent among the northern India.
